The 2005 Secret City Festival (the replacement for the city's Mayfest) will be held the weekend of June 17-18.

One exciting piece of news (something I had heard earlier that is now finally confirmed) is that the Beta-3 Calutron Facility at the Y-12 Plant will be open for public tours. See http://oakridger.com/stories/051305/new_20050513101.shtml for details.

I had a lucky opportunity to tour this facility several years ago when an Advisory Council for Historic Preservation group was touring the "signature facilities" of the Manhattan Project -- sites that could be considered historic landmarks from the Manhattan Project. The Beta 3 facility was on the tour, and tour participants were amazed at how much the place remains unchanged from the old photos of World War II Oak Ridge. This tour will very worthwhile, but because it is in a high-security area, people must pre-register by May 24.

Here are some key details from that newspaper article:
Quote:
90-minute tours will be held Saturday, June 18, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m.

The tours will consist of a bus ride from the American Museum of Science and Energy to Y-12 and back, a round trip of about a mile. Inside Beta 3, the tour route includes two flights of rather steep 1942-era stairs and involves walking about one-eighth mile. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and be alert to possible hazards in an industrial environment.

The tour is available to U.S. citizens only and proof of U.S. citizenship will require photo identification and one of the following: birth certificate, certificate of naturalization (Immigration and Naturalization Services Form N-550 or N-570 Certificate), certificate of U.S. citizenship (INS Form N-560 or N-561), report of birth abroad of a citizen of the United States of America (Form FS-240) or passport (active or expired).

Complete the tour registration form found on the Y-12 public Web site at http://www1.y12.doe.gov/news/events/secretcity/registration.php or notify BWXT Y-12 by phone at 574-1640. Registration must be completed no later than 4 p.m. May 24. Y-12 reserves the right to deny access to this tour.
